Here’s a great read, a complicated mystery, good friends, comradeship in hard times, and union workers shown in full humanity.
— Earl Silbar, AFSCME Steward, Chicago
Laced with dark humor and told with an insider’s knowledge, this fast-paced, nifty paperback is the best yet in the series.

In Slim to None, Tim Sheards’ fourth and most exciting and unnerving Lenny Moss mystery to date, you won’t be the only reader to say ‘Yes... Lenny should have an action figure in his likeness!’
— Pride & A Paycheck
In Philadelphia, union steward widower Lenny Moss works as a custodian at James Madison University Hospital. His is co-worker and friend Carlton knows Lenny has solved murder cases (see A Race Against Death). So when Carlton, hunting deer with a bow and arrow, notices a man dumping the body of a girl in Fairmont Park at one in the morning, he desperately calls and wakes up Lenny as he knows the trouble he could be in if he calls the cops especially with the meat he carves up in his garage from the animals he kills. Lenny tells him to dial 911 from a pay phone. The next day the cops question Carlton as they traced him by his buying food at an establishment next to the payphone. Lenny investigates the dead girl who turns out to be hospital nurse Briana Lenny needs to prove his friend’s innocence as Carleton is the prime suspect. However, as he finds clues the evidence he fears points to a lifelong friend. In A Race Against Death, the sly killer observes Lenny’s sleuthing as he plans to eliminate Moss and Carlton since when it comes to homicide friendship means nothing. The latest Lenny Moss medical amateur sleuth tale (see Some Cuts Never heal) is a super whodunit as the inquiry is enhanced by what happens in a hospital including administrative decisions that make no sense to the staff (ask Moose to explain). The story line is fast-paced and filled with dark hospital humor as Lenny and crew go about their job while he also works the investigation. With a strong mystery, readers will enjoy stopping at James Madison University Hospital as this series is one of the best.

The forth Sheard novel, Slim To None, Moss Must soul-search his relationship to a life-long friend. Timothy Sheard writes engrossing novels. The protagonist, Lenny Moss, is a “simple” metropolitan hospital custodian, but he has an affinity for solving crimes and helping people. Of course he doesn’t solve them on his own as he has many of the large crew of hospital staff willing to pitch in to assist. Did I mention that he is also the union steward who eventually repays any assistance he gets with his intellectual services. The best feature of Sheard’s books are his cast of characters, and many of them are characters, indeed. They are all fascinating. And the plots are clever also. It is to the readers’ benefit to get to know each any every one of these people, so you are encouraged to read the books in order, but it is not necessary to enjoy the books.

This was my second Lenny Moss mystery and it was even better than the first (A Race Against Death). The the author does an excellent job of balancing multiple plot lines and humor against danger and intrigue. You’d be hard pressed to find a more atypical hero than Lenny - he’s neither tall nor particularly good looking. But what he lacks in looks, he more than makes up for in courage, smarts and charisma. I liked him right from the beginning. Add to the mix a cast of fascinating, though far from perfect characters, and you’ve got a winning combination for an enjoyable read by any standard.

I rarely read mysteries, but Slim to None grabbed me: it starts with dramatic immediacy, so I couldn’t put it down. I liked its hospital setting (Sheard knows his medical procedure lingo!) and the all-too-real danger of not getting the treatment you need. I’m a union gal, so I liked the union rep main character who’s both committed to and hassled by his fellow workers. The gym owner’s a scary guy, and Lenny trapped in a hospital bed even scarier. Nice themes of who to trust - or not, especially when everyone seems to be withholding crucial information. A good read.

I really enjoyed this—the fourth book in the Lenny Moss series. The characters just keep developing, revealing more dimension to their personalities, and at the same time, show respect and caring towards each other. I’m looking forward for the last three novels to become available on Kindle.

You don’t have to work in the health field or even like hospitals to thoroughly enjoy the latest Lenny Moss mystery. With engaging characters and a story that will keep you guessing right up to the end, I found this to be a great summer read. strongly recommended.

The Lenny Moss series is great: engaging, intriguing, and always surprising. Just when you think you have the answer to the mystery Sheard throws a curve ball. I’ve read them all and always want the next one. Lenny, the main character, has been consistent throughout — until this one. Read it and be caught up in the action, the characters, the plot — and be surprised!

Having read all three of the previous Lenny Moss mysteries, I found this one to be fast paced and another great mystery by Tim Sheard. Finally someone who understands the workings of a Local union and has been able to put that into a good mystery story. If you haven’t read the others read this one first and you’ll be hooked.
— M. A. Flora
This is my favorite of the Lenny Moss series. Sheard is a hard hitting writer who really knows the hospital scene. his characters are completely believable, compelling and the plot is gripping. In this book in particular the action is non-stop! I can’t wait for the next installment in this series.
